Fear or Courage?

Fear is what drives what I do or don’t do far too often.  When I make choices that are based upon a fear it usually does nothing for my recovery.  Fear is not my friend.  It keeps me from moving forward and keeps my focus on what I am "moving away from" instead of focusing on where I need to go. So, I've decided to be afraid of fear!

Courage is my friend.  However, it does not come naturally to me as does fear. Courage moves me forward.  Courage moves me towards the things that make all the difference in my recovery.  What do I mean?

Well, about ten years ago I felt a “tug” to start a Christian mental health support group.  But, fear kept me from doing it. I feared that I would fail at leading it.  After all, what did I know?  So, I complained that there were no support groups of this type to my doctor.

Then one day my doctor “infused” me with the courage to start such a group.  He simply said that he saw me as a natural candidate to start such a group ministry. And then said he would help me do it!  At that point, I had an “infusion of courage”; no longer frozen in fear but was able to move forward.  So, five and half years ago Fresh Hope was birthed.

Moving forward is fulfilling.  Courage is a choice; a choice that no one else can make for us.  But, others can “infuse” courage into us.  And when they do, we need to seize the moment and move forward instead of staying stuck and frozen by fear.

How about you?  Is fear keeping you stuck? Has anyone ever infused you with courage? Are you moving forward in courage?  What courageous steps might you need to be taking in your recovery?
